XALT Energy Powered Hybrid Catamaran Named One of Ten Significant Boats of 2019

Midland, MI, November 27, 2019 – XALT Energy, a leading U.S. manufacturer of lithium-ion cells and battery systems for medium-heavy duty markets, has supplied the battery system for a vessel nominated for Boat of the Year by WorkBoat Magazine. BAE Systems, a system integrator of XALT battery systems, designs, manufactures, and supports complex ships with development and integration of electric power and propulsion systems and accessories. BAE Systems worked with Derecktor Shipyards of Mamaroneck, NY to build the Captain Ben Moore for Harbor Harvest of Norwalk, CT.

Harbor Harvest, The Captain Ben MooreThis cargo vessel is an all-aluminum catamaran electrically propelled hybrid that is 65 feet long and 21 feet wide. It is powered by a pair of Cummins QSB6.7 diesels and an XALT Energy battery system connected to a BAE Systems HybriGen® power and propulsion system. The system builds on the company’s proven technology that powers more than 10,000 transit buses around the world to bring a fully integrated system to the water. On this hybrid, the accessory power system powers all equipment on the vessel such as the cargo refrigeration units, lighting, pumps, HVAC and crane using XALT’s electrical power.

The Captain Ben Moore will sail the waterways of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey to deliver fresh produce, dairy, meats and seafood from farmers to customers. Using the available waterways will provide easy entry into these markets while lessening on-road highway congestion and emissions as the Captain Ben Moore will reduce a nine to twelve-hour truck delivery from upstate farms to New York City or Long Island into a 15-mile, less than an hour boat ride under quiet electric drive, from Norwalk to Huntington, NY on Long Island’s North Shore.
